In 490 BCE Pheidippides ran for 36 hours straight from Athens to Sparta to seek help in defending Athens from a Persian invasion. He was hailed as a hero and his run stands enduringly as one of greatest physical accomplishments in history.
Dean Karnazes honours this achievement and his own Greek heritage by attempting this ancient journey in modern times. His account of running the gruelling Spartathlon, fuelled only by the figs, olives and meats available to Pheidippides, will captivate even the most sedentary readers.

With an unprecedented demand for entries into next year’s Comrades Marathon, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has now closed the entry process barely one week after the #Comrades2019 entry opening.
CMA Race Director, Rowyn James says, “We reached the cap of 25,000 entries last night and therefore shut down the entry process. The unprecedented demand for Comrades Marathon entries has been amazing.”
James adds, “The Comrades Marathon brand is obviously in an incredibly good space and it is credit to the team who efficiently and effectively go about putting Runners First on a daily basis; as well as all of our sponsors, stakeholders and athletes who are so vested in The Ultimate Human Race.”
Athletes from 80 countries have entered The Ultimate Human Race with the lion’s share of international entries coming from the United Kingdom, Zimbabwe, India, USA, Brazil and Australia.
CMA Chairperson Cheryl Winn says, “We regret that there may be some runners who were hoping to secure an entry to next year’s Comrades Marathon but somehow missed out. The CMA thanks all South Africans for their tremendous support and contribution to The Ultimate Human Race.”
Winn adds, “We recommend that all runners keep training and stick to their fitness goals. The possibility of a Comrades Substitution between 1 March and 15 April 2019 is still there so we urge our runners to not lose all hope.
The 2019 Comrades Marathon is the 94th edition of the world’s most famous ultra-marathon and the 48th Comrades Up Run, starting at 5h30 at the Durban City Hall and finishing 12 hours later at the Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg.
Why do so many runners who start an ultramarathon not finish? How can you give yourself the best chance of finishing a 50 or 100 mile race? Do you really need to run 50-100 mile weeks to finish an ultramarathon? The Minimalist’s Guide to Running an Ultramarathon answers these questions and gives you the blueprint you need to finish your ultramarathon. It dispels the myth that you need to run lots of miles to finish an ultramarathon. Understanding that every runner has different abilities and goals, this book does not provide a “one size fits all” training program. It gives you key principles and guidelines that will allow you to create the best training program that meets your needs. Regardless of whether you are a seasoned ultrarunner looking for more tools to improve your performance or are new to the sport and want to know the minimum amount of training needed to finish an ultramarathon, this book will give you the framework for the optimal training program. It focuses on the most efficient training to minimize your training time while providing maximum benefit.
The optimal training program for running an ultramarathon includes much more than just running. If you ask anyone who has completed an ultramarathon, many will tell you much of the race is mental. Research continues to show how important strength training is to running performance and injury prevention.

Ray Zahab was always the last to be picked for team games. Eventually, he quit trying and as he got older, he took up smoking and drinking. But after his grandfather and uncle died, and his father suffered a stroke, Ray realized he had to take charge of his life.
Ray gave up his destructive habits and started looking for new challenges. When he read about the 160-km Yukon ultramarathon, he knew he had to give it a try. Everyone thought he was crazy. Ray had never even run in a regular marathon.
From the author of the bestseller Eat and Run, a thrilling new memoir about his grueling, exhilarating, and immensely inspiring 46-day run to break the speed record for the Appalachian Trail.
Scott Jurek is one of the world’s best known and most beloved ultrarunners. Renowned for his remarkable endurance and speed, accomplished on a vegan diet, he’s finished first in nearly all of ultrarunning’s elite events over the course of his career. But after two decades of racing, training, speaking, and touring, Jurek felt an urgent need to discover something new about himself. He embarked on a wholly unique challenge, one that would force him to grow as a person and as an athlete: breaking the speed record for the Appalachian Trail. North is the story of the 2,189-mile journey that nearly shattered him.
When he set out in the spring of 2015, Jurek anticipated punishing terrain, forbidding weather, and inevitable injuries. He would have to run nearly 50 miles a day, every day, for almost seven weeks. He knew he would be pushing himself to the limit, that comfort and rest would be in short supply — but he couldn’t have imagined the physical and emotional toll the trip would exact, nor the rewards it would offer.
The BR135 was inspired “in concept and in spirit” by the Badwater 135 in Death Valley, California. The event includes five races simultaneously, split into two solo runs with different cut-offs as well as relay categories for two, three or four people. The BR135 had its inaugural running in 2006 with 10 competitors and only four finishers. It remains a small race with entry limited to between 67 and 77 runners in the main 48-hour event and a further 74 across the other divisions. Finishing the solo event in under 48 hours is included in the qualifying standards for entry into Badwater because it’s part of the Badwater World Cup, an international series of 135-mile races held in exotic locations under extreme conditions. The other two are Badwater itself and the Arrowhead 135 in freezing Minnesota, also in January
