Angeles Crest 100 Mile Endurance Run. -August 4, 2018 at 5:00:00 AM/PST.

The San Gabriel back country retains much of the natural beauty, if not the primitive wilderness of yesteryear. Thanks largely to the foresight and capable supervision of the U.S. Forest Service and hundreds of volunteers. Picnic areas and campgrounds have been constructed with minimum displacement of the natural setting.

Those desiring to see this primitive wilderness in a single day are invited to participate in the Angeles Crest 100 Mile Endurance Run.

The 2018 race date is on August 4, 2018 at 5:00:00 AM/PST.

11th Annual KEYS100 is May 19-20, 2018!

The 11th annual KEYS100 will be held the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, May 19 and 20, 2018. The event is a series of point-to-point races, beginning in Key Largo for the 100-mile races, in Marathon for the 50 mile race and in Big Pine Key for the 50 kilometer race, all finishing in Key West on the Atlantic Ocean at Higgs Beach. KEYS100 also promotes charitable fundraising for “The Cancer Foundation of the Florida Keys” in support of their educational work and outreach, free screenings and direct support of cancer patients and their families throughout the Keys. Individual runners and teams are invited to earn a refund of their full race entry fee by raising funds for the “Foundation”. (Visit the “Registration” page for details.) KEYS100 includes four distinct competitions: individual races of 100 miles, 50 miles and 50 kilometers, and our original Florida Keys six runner 100 mile team relay race. In the individual races, runners may compete with a support crew or without. Eleven (11) full aid stations serve all individual runners; these are located at approximately ten (10) mile intervals. In addition, coolers with ice and water are positioned at approximately five (5) mile intervals. People competing without a crew may place drop bags with personal gear at aid stations along the route. THE FOLLOWING RUNNER LIMITS WILL APPLY FOR 2018: 300 IN THE INDIVIDUAL 100 MILE RACE; 200 IN THE 50 MILE RACE; 250 IN THE 50 KILOMETER RACE; 125 TOTAL TEAMS, INCLUDING MILITARY.

Badwater 135 Qualifying Standards – Badwater 135 Ultramarathon – July 23-25 , 2018

Those submitting an application to compete in the 2018 Badwater 135 Ultramarathon must meet at least ONE or more of the following THREE Qualifying Standards. Please review these Qualifying Standards to determine which standard(s) describes you, if any. You will be required to select at least one of these when you submit your race application. Those who do not meet at least one of these standards MAY NOT apply.

Here are the Qualifying Standards, at least ONE of which must be met prior to applying:

  1. You have officially finished the Badwater 135 (the actual race held since 1987; “solo” efforts will not be considered, except those made prior to 1990) AND have completed at least one significant ultra running event (or significant ultra cycling or triathlon event) in the previous 12 months other than the Badwater 135.
  2. You have officially finished at least THREE running races of at least 100 continuous miles in length, at least one of them in the previous 12 months. Exception: Officially finishing the 81-mile BADWATER SALTON SEA race “counts” as one 100-mile race for this qualifying purpose. (Please see the list of Preferred Qualifying Races below.)
  3. You have officially finished the Brazil 135+ (either 135 miles in 48 hours or 160 miles in 62.5 hours) AND have completed at least one significant ultra running or other endurance sports event in the previous 12 months.

Preferred Qualifying Races

Not all 100-mile (and longer) races are created equal; some are more suitable than others for preparing a Badwater 135 applicant to be successful at the world’s toughest foot race.

Our view of ultrarunning is expansive, with the experience of an epic route being intrinsic to what we call “exploring the outer and inner universes.” As well, the physical, mental, emotional, and logistical challenge of traversing  a widely varying course with a plethora of terrain and climatic changes provides a more rewarding – and challenging – experience for all involved.

For 2017 and beyond, applicants with some of the following races on their resumé will have a greater likelihood of being selected to compete in the Badwater 135. (In other words, these races are not strictly required, but completion of some of them is highly recommended for all applicants.)

Spartathlon 2018 – 250 km – 36 hours – 28 – 29 September 2018

Spartathlon is the event that brings this deed to attention today by drawing a legend out of the depths of history. The idea for its creation is belongs to John Foden, a British RAF Wing Commander. As a lover of Greece and student of ancient Greek history, Foden stopped his reading of Herodotus’ narration regarding Pheidippides, puzzled and wondering if a modern man could cover the distance from Athens to Sparta, i.e. 250 kms, within 36 hours.

Described as the world’s most grueling race, the Spartathlon runs over rough tracks and muddy paths (often it rains during the race), crosses vineyards and olive groves, climbs steep hillsides and, most challenging of all, takes the runners on the 1,200 meter ascent and descent of Mount Parthenio in the dead of night. This is the mountain, covered with rocks and bushes, on which it is said Pheidippides met the god Pan. In 2,500 years man has had no impact at all. There is still no pathway over the mountain that is swept by strong winds with temperatures as low as 4°C. The ascent is marked out by a trail of battery-driven colored flashing lights and its challenge is a trial for human stamina and mental strength. Over the mountain the last sections are no less energy sapping and exhausting for the runners as they follow a road that winds up and down hills before descending into Sparta. Even the finest athletes start hallucinating as they cover these final stages.
Having lost all sense of time and reality, they are “on automatic” as they push their weary bodies on towards the finishing line at the statue of Leonidas. At most, only about a third of the runners who leave Athens end the course in Sparta. The goal of all participants is to cover the course within the 36-hour time limit. Setting records is the primary aim. Those who succeed in reaching Sparta have trouble finding words to describe their feelings. Spartathlon has to be lived through. It is a very personal experience in which the athletes dream about participating. Their imagination is stirred by the idea of being a modern Pheidippides, running in the footsteps of the ancient messenger. They train for years to get fit enough both physically and mentally to meet the race’s demands.
To apply to Spartathlon 2018, runners need to have fulfilled at least one (1) of the following criteria within the years 2016, 2017 or 2018 (up to February 24th):
