COMRADES TO GO AHEAD AS PLANNED

COMRADES TO GO AHEAD AS PLANNED

The Comrades Marathon Association’s (CMA) Board convened an urgent meeting last night (Monday, 16.3.2020) in light of the outbreak of the Corona Virus, also known as COVID-19 and the subsequent postponement or cancellation of sporting events and mass gatherings in the country.

Athletics South Africa (ASA), under the auspices of which the Comrades Marathon is held, has aligned itself with the National State of Disaster as pronounced by State President Cyril Ramaphosa and have taken a decision to postpone with immediate effect all athletics events in the country at all levels for 30 days due to COVID-19.

This comes as the President specified strict measures to combat the virus which has been described as a pandemic by the World Health Organisation.

The decision includes the postponement of all school athletics including the ASA National Primary Schools T&F Championships which was scheduled for Pietermaritzburg this week; the postponement of all club and provincial activities, including Fun Runs, Park Runs, Road-Running, Cross Country, Trail Running and Track & Field events; as well as the postponement of all ASA championships.

Under the ongoing guidance of the government on the virus, as well as ASA and KwaZulu-Natal Athletics (KZNA), the CMA Board will review the situation by the 17th of April and advise Comrades athletes and stakeholders on the way forward, depending on the status of the virus in the country at the time.

CMA Chairperson, Cheryl Winn says, “With nearly three months to go to #Comrades2020, the CMA Board has decided that it is premature to postpone this year’s Comrades Marathon. We will however continue to monitor the situation on a daily basis and will make a decision by April 17th depending upon how the situation evolves on whether to postpone #Comrades2020 to a date later in the year.”

Winn adds, “We will make announcements and issue updates on an ongoing basis. As the CMA Board, we have to consider the best interest and well-being of our athletes, supporters, spectators, volunteers and the public. With 282 successful Substitution applications having been processed since opening of the 2020 Substitution period yesterday, we urge all Comrades runners to continue with their training preparations for the 95th edition of the Ultimate Human Race.”

COMRADES SIGNS 3-YEAR PARTNERSHIP WITH THIRSTI WATER

Runners will quench their thirst with Thirsti Water at this year’s 94th Comrades Marathon after the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) announced the signing of a 3-year partnership with local bottled water company, Thirsti Water. The top spring water brand will feature as the exclusive Hydration Partner to the Comrades Marathon going forward.

Runners will be supplied with Thirsti Water at refreshment stations all along the 87km Comrades route, in addition to other traditional refreshments. Focused on delivering the highest quality water that Nature can provide, 2 million Thirsti water sachets will be made available for #Comrades2019.

With this deal just concluded, Thirsti and the CMA are committed to jointly working on a plan in the future years of this agreement to reduce the use of single use plastics (SUP’s) as part of the strategy to totally phase out plastic use by 2025.

Thirsti will be contributing tremendous logistical support to the Comrades Marathon in the form of warehousing and delivery of its sponsored water; and the subsequent direct distribution to the 43 Comrades refreshment stations.

Their comprehensive and efficient distribution of hydration throughout the 87km race is notable, thus enabling the CMA to ensure that all runners have adequate water available and that no station runs dry.

As part of Thirsti’s generous agreement, an extra 52,000 bottles of their spring water will be made available. Each finisher will receive a bottle of Thirsti spring water in their goodie bag and at the finish; as well as being utilised to hydrate the entire CMA volunteer core on race day.

2019 COMRADES MARATHON ENTRIES CLOSED

With an unprecedented demand for entries into next year’s Comrades Marathon, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) has now closed the entry process barely one week after the #Comrades2019 entry opening.

CMA Race Director, Rowyn James says, “We reached the cap of 25,000 entries last night and therefore shut down the entry process. The unprecedented demand for Comrades Marathon entries has been amazing.”

James adds, “The Comrades Marathon brand is obviously in an incredibly good space and it is credit to the team who efficiently and effectively go about putting Runners First on a daily basis; as well as all of our sponsors, stakeholders and athletes who are so vested in The Ultimate Human Race.”

Athletes from 80 countries have entered The Ultimate Human Race with the lion’s share of international entries coming from the United Kingdom, Zimbabwe, India, USA, Brazil and Australia.

CMA Chairperson Cheryl Winn says, “We regret that there may be some runners who were hoping to secure an entry to next year’s Comrades Marathon but somehow missed out. The CMA thanks all South Africans for their tremendous support and contribution to The Ultimate Human Race.”

Winn adds, “We recommend that all runners keep training and stick to their fitness goals. The possibility of a Comrades Substitution between 1 March and 15 April 2019 is still there so we urge our runners to not lose all hope.

The 2019 Comrades Marathon is the 94th edition of the world’s most famous ultra-marathon and the 48th Comrades Up Run, starting at 5h30 at the Durban City Hall and finishing 12 hours later at the Scottsville Racecourse in Pietermaritzburg.
